The Quick Path to Enlightenment

In the west we have many, many things, including many spiritual teachers.  All of the magazines, posters, ads in the glossies and so on are like a veritable mall where we get to choose the ones that we like the most.  We quickly flip through looking for the ones with the best looks, or the ones that look like our egos imagination of the real teacher.  We look at the size and color of the ad and the catchy slogan or slick paragraph designed to catch our attention, and then if that person passes our inner test we go and learn spirituality from her or him.  This may be a good way to shop in the west and east.  Unfortunately spirituality is not for sale and it is likely that you will find a teacher just as good as the glossy one right in your own community.

Practical Spirituality – October 20, 2009 – On Building Self-Identity

Today it is very difficult for a person to know who he or she really is.  I don’t mean that one should “do in order to express who they are,” as I once saw on a TV show portrayed as the wisdom of the day.  It sounded good at the time, but I recognized that something was wrong with it.  The truth is that it was backward; one must be who they are in order to do.  If this is not the case one can behave like a parrot.  The parrot can say a lot.  It speaks before it knows what it is saying and may never know.  Sometimes humans begin to do before they know who they are.  When this occurs what they do is not an expression of the self it is an expression of who people say they are or should be.  Sometimes a person can even be swept away and think, “I am that person,” when they really aren’t.  This leads to depression, hopelessness, and the idea that the world is useless and empty.
